Village of Westmont
Date Issued: April 22, 2013
The Village of Westmont will participate in the DuPage River Sweep Program on May 18 along with more than 20 other communities throughout the County. The program focuses on coordinating local volunteers in an effort to help clean up our area waterways.
"Thanks to over 40 volunteers, last year's River Sweep was able to remove 650 pounds of garbage out of St. Joseph's Creek,” says Village Trustee Steve Nero, who is also the coordinator for Westmont’s River Sweep Program. “This is a great way to really make a positive impact in your village."
The River Sweep is organized by The Conservation Foundation, which is dedicated to preserving open space and natural lands, protecting rivers and watersheds, and promoting stewardship of the environment in northeast Illinois. Since the event was launched in 1991, more than 8800 volunteers have removed nearly 220 tons of garbage from DuPage County waterways. The DuPage County River Sweep is supported by the DuPage County Stormwater Management Division.
The success of the program is dependent on volunteers stepping forward to help with the project. To sign up or to receive more information, contact Steve Nero at snero@westmont.il.gov or 630-776-8302. Additional information can be found by following the link below to the Conservation Foundation.
