2019 Mosquito Control Information

Village of Westmont
Date Issued: June 5, 2019

The Village of Westmont contracts with Clarke Mosquito Management to help control mosquito populations.  Spring 2019 has brought heavy rainfall to the Midwest.  According to the U.S. National Weather Service, the Chicagoland area has experienced record amounts of rainfall for the month of May, with 8.24” of rain falling at O’Hare Airport this month.  As a result of this heavy precipitation, there are many sources of standing water around our community, which are prime mosquito breeding sources.  As temperatures continue to rise, multiple broods of floodwater mosquito species will begin hatching in the coming weeks.

SURVEILLANCE ACTIVITY
Clarke maintains a network of nearly 250 mosquito traps across Illinois for monitoring mosquito populations and potential virus activity.  Surveillance data is used by Clarke’s service operations and determines the need for and best timing of adult mosquito control measures (ULV spraying).  Clarke’s surveillance network is being closely monitored for population spikes associated with the predicted brood hatch.  Clarke’s predictive modeling software is also indicating a population spike of floodwater mosquitoes will be reaching Chicagoland during the first two weeks of June.

FIGHT THE BITE
The single-most important thing residents can do is eliminate all possible sources of standing water around their properties.  Mosquitoes lay their eggs in water, which develop into mosquito larvae and emerge as adults over a period of several days.  By following these best practices at least every three days, together we can Fight the Bite:
  • Get rid of any water holding containers, such as old tires, tin cans, buckets, drums, or bottles.
  • Fill in or drain any low places such as puddles and ruts.
  • Clean gutters periodically.
  • Keep drains, ditches, and culverts clean of weeds and trash so water will drain properly.
  • Cover trash containers to keep out rain water.
  • Repair leaky pipes and outside faucets.
  • Drain plastic wading pools and store them indoors when not in use.
  • Toss water that has accumulated in any kid toys.
  • Make sure your backyard pool is properly cared for while on vacation.
  • Fill in tree rot holes and hollow stumps that hold water with sand and concrete
  • Change the water in bird baths and plant pots or drip trays
  • Keep grass cut short and shrubbery well-trimmed around the house so adult mosquitoes will not hide there.
In line with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations, residents are also encouraged to limit their potential exposure to mosquitoes by:
  • Avoid outdoor activities at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Wear long sleeves and long pants when mosquitoes are active.
  • Apply CDC-recommended mosquito repellent during daylight and evening hours. These include products with DEET, picaridin, IR-3535 and oil of lemon eucalyptus.
  • Keep windows and garage doors closed, and fixing broken screens and doors to prevent mosquitoes from entering homes.
RESIDENT HOTLINE
Residents are also encouraged to report standing water sources and nuisance mosquito populations directly to Clarke through the Resident Hotline.  This information is used by Clarke to identify and prioritize treatment areas in the village.  The Clarke Resident Hotline may be accessed online at clarkeportal.com/hotline or by phone at 800-942-2555.

EARTHRIGHT

The Village of Westmont also contracts with Clarke Mosquito to implement EarthRight, a community public health service program that combines effective mosquito control with sustainability.  EarthRight utilizes only products listed with the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI), which are safe for use in and around organic crops and gardens.  The EarthRight program also uses earth-friendly application methods such as bicycles, electric sprayers, hybrid Prius cars and fleet management technology to reduce emissions, thus leaving a smaller carbon footprint in the community.

Westmont's mosquito control program with Clarke has four phases:

Surveillance and Testing This involves mapping the likely large mosquito breeding habitats of the Village and placing several traps to monitor mosquito populations. These traps yield qualitative and quantitative information about mosquito species, populations and whether they are carriers of West Nile Virus.

Larval Control This involves introducing OMRI listed bacterial agents into standing water such as retention ponds, storm drains and other mosquito breeding areas.  These agents prevent the development of mosquito larvae from becoming adults.

Adult Control This  involves distributing a very small amount of an OMRI Listed adulticide product in a dispersible cloud of fine droplets after sunset, when mosquitoes are most active.  The product is disseminated via trucks with an electric sprayer.

Community Education This reminds residents to follow the guidelines listed above to eliminate possible mosquito habitats and to also properly prepare when leaving the house at dusk to avoid exposure to mosquitoes.

For more information on how to prevent West Nile Virus or for additional information on Westmont’s mosquito control program, EarthRight, please go to earthrightbyclarke.com or call Clarke Mosquito at 1-800-942-2555.
