Summer is quickly approaching and DuPage County Animal Services (DCAS) staff and volunteers are gearing up to welcome kids back for the fun and exciting summer camps offered at the shelter. Each summer camp has a special theme designed to appeal to young animal lovers and environmental enthusiasts. Camps are $150 per session. Following is a list of camps that are offered.
Animal Advocates
June 17-19, for ages 11-13
Campers will get a behind the scenes look at animal sheltering, help in marketing animals available for adoption, learn how they can help feral cats, and so much more. Through presentations, engaging activities, and animal interactions campers will learn about animal welfare issues and become empowered to make a difference in their communities.
Animal Doctors
June 24-June 26, for ages 11-13
Purrfect for campers who love animals and want to pursue a career in veterinary medicine one day. Animal Doctors will give them an inside look at what veterinary medicine is all about. Hear from a Veterinary Administrator and Veterinary Technician, get a chance to perform a mock surgery, and practice detective skills to determine the source of a rapidly spreading disease. Animal Doctors provides a fun, engaging look into the world of veterinary medicine using hands on projects, guest speakers, and games.
Fido Fluent
July 8-10, for ages 11-13
Campers will learn about dog training, how to read dog body language, dog jobs, and so much more. Through engaging games, activities, guest presenters, and lots of hands on time with dogs campers will leave camp fluent in dog and they’ll have a great time learning.
Critter Careers
July 15- 17, for ages 11-13
Critter Careers will explore a wide array of careers where humans work side by side with the animals they love. Campers will get to meet special guests in animal welfare and other professions and even see first hand what some of the DCAS professionals do day to day. Each day will include presentations, activities, and hands on time with shelter animals.
Furever Friends
July 22-24, for ages 7-10
Furever Friends will focus on responsible pet care and emphasize the lifelong commitment of owning a pet. Campers will learn how to find the right pet for their families, budget for pet ownership, and how to safely and humanely interact with animals through games, crafts, activities, and, of course, hands on time with shelter animals.
AniPals
July 29-31, for ages 7-10 - class is currently full, but kids can be put on waitlist
AniPals is sure to be a furtastic time for the animal loving kiddo who just loves to help out. AniPals campers will have the opportunity to read to shelter dogs, exercise rabbits, and spend quality time with cats. Through crafts, activities, and story time campers will learn about animal body language, safe animal interactions, and responsible pet ownership.
Petite Paws
August 5-7, for ages 5-6
Petite Paws is a shortened Mini-Camp designed for children to learn about animal behavior, safe animal interactions, humane animal care, and so much more through games, story time, and crafts. Campers will get to practice soft hands and gentle petting by spending time with shelter animals.
Camps fill up quick and have a maximum of 12 participants per session. To learn more about the summer programs offered and to download a registration form visit the shelter's Humane Education page.
