“It was 15 years ago this month that we launched the Westmont Special Events Corporation,” said Larry McIntyre, one of the founders of the organization. “It’s amazing to see how much can be accomplished with community volunteers.”
In 2004, Westmont Cruisin’ Nights averaged about 25 cars per event; A decade and a half later, this event now averages about 300 cars and over 2500 people each week, bringing in more than 25,000 people to downtown Westmont every Summer. And in 2018, WGN-Radio proclaimed Westmont Cruisin’ Nights as the best weekly summer car show in the Chicagoland area.
The Taste of Westmont, WSEC’s other signature event, has also seen considerable growth, and brings in an estimated 30,000 people over a 4-day event. Over the years, the event has almost doubled in size in terms of carnival rides, vendors, and number of scheduled entertainment acts.
“We have hundreds of volunteers help out every year,” said WSEC President Sam Alonzo. “We couldn’t do it without them. I especially want to thank our WSEC board members and core volunteers who work throughout the year planning all of these fun events.”
Westmont Special Events is also active with other community events such as Wicked West Fest, Westmont Holly Days, and the new pub tour events.
“We strive to coordinate events that appeal to the entire community,” said WSEC Office Manager Kristina Kaniauskaite “We’re always interested in trying to see if we can improve our events. Community feedback is very important.”
