Village of Westmont
Date Issued: January 16, 2019
National Mentoring Month is a campaign held each January to promote youth mentoring in the United States. The Village of Westmont Communications Department supported Mentoring Month by providing an internship for Timothy Christian High School Senior Heidi Westra. Westra participated in an eight-day internship in which she was able to shadow staff and learn about marketing and community events. Heidi had the opportunity to write and publish press releases, attend and participate in various governmental meetings, and learn graphic design programs. “It was a really great experience,” said Westra. “I loved learning the different programs and what a communications job is all about.”
Each year since 2002 when President George W. Bush first endorsed this campaign, Congress has supported the initiative by declaring January as National Mentoring Month. Based on the positive results of this internship, the Village of Westmont is looking to develop more opportunities to work with local students and assist them with learning more about their potential fields of interest.
