[ARCHIVED] Westmont Welcomes Sister City Delegation from Hsinchu County, Taiwan

Sister City Delegation Visit 2018
Village of Westmont
Date Issued: July 11, 2018

On Monday, July 9, Westmont Mayor Ron Gunter, Village elected officials, officials from the Culture Center of TECO and Westmont village and park district staff welcomed a delegation of 26 officials from our Sister City, Hsinchu County, Taiwan.  The delegation, led by Magistrate Ching Chun Chiu, includes directors from Hsinchu County's cultural and education departments, an 8-person dance troupe as well as a master gourmet chef.

“We are honored to welcome our Sister City friends here to Westmont for the first time,” said Mayor Gunter.  “Our Sister City relationship has brought us many great cultural exchange opportunities.  We are looking forward to showing our guests the Westmont community.”

After arriving to applause, flowers and many handshakes, the delegation posed for pictures in front of Village Hall before moving inside for an official Sister Cities reception.  The meeting included introductions and opening remarks from both Mayor Gunter and Magistrate Chiu.

“Westmont is a friendly city,” said Magistrate Chiu. “It is a very beautiful city and I look forward to enjoying many experiences here.”

The reception also included presentations by the delegation about cultural opportunities offered in Hsinchu County with an invitation to Westmont to attend the International Flower and Drum Festival in August, and about the educational efforts currently being pursued by the local Hsinchu County High School in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics with a request to focus future educational exchanges in this area.  The meeting ended with a gift exchange followed by lunch at Uncle Bub’s.

In August 2017, Westmont Mayor Gunter and Hsinchu Magistrate Chiu signed the official Sister City agreements pledging to work together and foster a relationship that supports cultural exchange, educational exchange, municipal exchange, and economic development.  This past March, 12 delegates from the Village of Westmont travelled to Hsinchu County with a focus on economic development.

The delegation will be in town through Sunday, July 15 and has a full scheduled planned including a mini performance by the dance troupe at the Taste of Westmont on Friday, July 13 at 7:45 p.m. on the main stage followed by a full 90-minute performance at the Westmont High School on Saturday, July 14, a White Sox/Cardinals game at Guaranteed Rate Field and being part of the Taste of Taiwan food booth at Taste of Westmont.
