Village of Westmont
Date Issued: April 19, 2018
The Westmont Public Library will open its Westmont Seed Library on Earth Day, Sunday, April 22 at 2:00 p.m. Residents of Westmont and surrounding communities are welcome to attend and have first picks at the seeds available for free to anyone who would like to start or continue their garden. Tomatoes, peas, beans, and lettuce will be available on opening day with a limit of 2 packages per borrower. More seed varieties will be available in the future. The Seed Library is located in at the Library of Things wall located next to study rooms A and B.
“Our library will aim to increase biodiversity in our community, as well as offer a space to learn about seeds,” said Justin Williams, Adult Reference Librarian. “In doing so, we will have a glimpse of how our grandmothers and grandfathers ate from their own land and labor. The importance of this knowledge is staggering.”
In establishing the Westmont Seed Library, the Westmont Public Library has partnered with the Westmont High School National Honors Society students to create a space in our community devoted to harboring heirloom seeds and preserving the genetic prosperity of plants. These seeds have been passed down generation to generation for thousands of years. In the coming year, the Westmont Public Library will hold educational programs in gardening and seed saving, as well as community seed swaps.
All are welcome to this free event. All of the seeds available on Earth Day have been graciously donated to the Westmont Seed Library by the Downers Grove Legacy Seed Library. Please contact the Westmont Public Library at 630-969-5625 for more information.
