Posted on: March 29, 2018[ARCHIVED] Kidde Smoke Detector Recall
Village of Westmont
Date Issued: March 29, 2018
Kidde is recalling approximately 500,000 dual-sensor smoke detectors sold in the U.S. and Canada due to a yellow cap left on during the manufacturing process. The cap may cover one of the sensors and keep the detector from noticing smoke, which poses a risk of consumers not being alerted to a fire in their home according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The recall involves Kidde smoke detectors models PI2010 and PI9010 with a date code of 2016 September 10 through 2017 October 13 for both models. The model number and date code can be found on the back of the unt.
The smoke detectors were sold at Menards, The Home Depot, Walmart and other retail stores around the country, and online at Amazon.com, ShopKidde.com and other websites from September 2016 through January 2018. They cost $20-$40 and were made in China.
To determine if your smoke detector is part of the recall, remove the alarm from the wall/ceiling and visually inspect it through the opening on the side of the alarm for the presence of a yellow cap. Consumers should not attempt to take apart the alarm, open the casing, or otherwise remove the yellow cap themselves. If a yellow cap is present, the consumer should immediately contact Kidde to receive instructions and request a free replacement smoke alarm. They should remove and discard the recalled smoke alarm only after they receive and install the replacement alarm. If no yellow cap is present, consumers should reinstall the smoke alarm and no further action is needed.
