[ARCHIVED] Westmont Named Tree City USA by Arbor Day Foundation

Village of Westmont
Date Issued: March 22, 2018

Westmont has been named a 2017 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. The Village also received a Tree City USA Growth Award, which recognizes Tree USA communities that demonstrate higher levels of tree care.  The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.

"Tree City USA communities see the impact an urban forest has in a community first hand," said Dan Lambe, President of the Arbor Day Foundation. "Additionally, recognition brings residents together and creates a sense of community pride, whether it's through volunteer engagement or public education."

Trees are assets to the community when properly planted and maintained. To encourage tree planting in the community, Westmont offers two programs for residents that promote planting with locally acclimated, long-lived, diverse tree species to increase the health and vitality of our urban forest.

TREE SEEDLING GIVEAWAY
To celebrate Arbor Day, the Westmont Environmental Improvement Commission (EIC) is coordinating its annual tree seedling giveaway.  On Friday, April 27, Village Forester Jon Yeater and EIC volunteers will be at the Westmont Library to hand out tree seedlings to Westmont residents. For more details on available seedlings and to sign-up, visit http://westmont.illinois.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=698

TREE SHARE PROGRAM
The Parkway Tree Planting Program is a voluntary, cost sharing program allowing any Westmont property owner to replace public parkway trees by ordering through the Village. The purchase, site preparation, and planting of the trees is performed by the Public Works Department. The average cost of nursery materials is paid by the property owner. For more information on the Parkway Tree Planting Program, visit http://westmont.illinois.gov/index.aspx?nid=255.
