Village of Westmont
Date Issued: January 18, 2018
At 4:51 a.m. on Thursday, January 18, the Village of Westmont received a 911 call reporting smoke at the Jewel Food Store at 4 East Ogden Avenue in Westmont. Westmont Police arrived first on the scene followed by Westmont Fire Dept. at 4:56 a.m. Upon arrival, the Fire Dept. Duty Chief of the incident upgraded to a general alarm response that brought in additional fire companies from Westmont, Downers Grove, Clarendon Hills, Hinsdale, Tri-State, and Pleasantview. The fire sprinkler system was activated at 4:57 a.m., and along with the fire suppression effort of fire personnel, the fire was contained to a small portion of the building, however, there was heavy smoke throughout the store. The fire was extinguished at approximately 5:20 a.m. and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
“This fire could have been much worse without the effectiveness of fire sprinklers and the quick response of emergency service personnel,” said Fire Department Deputy Chief Steve Riley. “We are happy to report that there were no injuries in this incident. We want to remind all businesses and residents that whenever there is a potential safety issue such as a fire, do not hesitate, call 911 immediately.”
