Posted on: February 21, 2017[ARCHIVED] Four Residents Rescued In Apartment Fire
Village of Westmont
Published: February 21, 2017
On Monday, February 20 at 9:09 p.m., the Westmont Fire Department was dispatched to 52 W. 60th Street for a reported blanket on fire.
Upon the Westmont Fire Department’s arrival, they confirmed heavy fire showing from a second floor apartment with reports of residents trapped on their balconies. Firefighters immediately deployed ground ladders to make these rescues while other fire crews deployed hose lines to get the fire under control. “The fire crews did an outstanding job tonight,” said Fire Department Deputy Chief Steve Riley. “They worked quickly to rescue 4 persons from their balconies and were able to get the fire under control within 15 minutes.”
The fire was contained to one unit, however, the resulting smoke caused considerable damage to the entire building and had to be completely evacuated, which displaced 20 families. The Westmont Fire Department teamed with the Red Cross to assist residents with a place to stay for the night. None of the residents nor firefighters were hurt during the incident. The fire is still under investigation.
