Village of Westmont
Date Issued: May 6, 2016
In 2016, there will be two sessions of the Kids Safety Preparedness Camp. The first session will be held June 16 & 17, and the second session will be August 3 & 4. Camps will be from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Frank Johanik Fire Department Headquarters, 6015 S. Cass Avenue.
In addition to typical fire safety information, Community Service Office Roseanne Terry and Fire Inspector John McIntosh have broadened the program to include internet safety, animal and pet care, bicycle and water safety, anti-bullying awareness, first aid, emergency preparedness, and more.
The camp provides an opportunity for 8, 9 and 10 year old children to spend hands-on time with their local heroes and learn much more than just the usual safety lessons. Applicants must live or attend school within the Village of Westmont or participate in a Westmont-based Cub Scout or Brownie Troop.
McIntosh said, “We do hands-on fire extinguisher training, a bicycle safety obstacle course, and other numerous team building activities. We end the two-day program with a water fight between the kids and the fire-police personnel, which the kids love.”
The camp is co-hosted by the Westmont Special Events Corporation, Oakbrook Toyota in Westmont, Westmont Citizens Fire Academy Alumni, and the Westmont Citizens Police Academy Alumni.
