October is packed full of fun Halloween Happenings in Westmont! The Village of Westmont encourages everyone to have a fun & safe Halloween. Below are some Halloween safety tips as well as calendar dates for some upcoming Halloween events.
TRICK OR TREAT TRAIL
Saturday, Oct. 24
Downtown Westmont
Put on your Halloween costumes and head to Downtown Westmont on October 24, from 11am-1pm, as local businesses in the downtown area offer treats and goodies to our costumed guests. The Trick or Treat Trail is hosted by the Westmont Chamber of Commerce and is a great opportunity for children to trick or treat in a safe environment. Participating businesses will be clearly marked and offer treats as well as business specials. This event is free and open to the public. Also, the Westmont Chamber is working with the People’s Resource Center for their Stuff The Truck Program - residents are asked to bring a canned food and dry goods item to donate to PRC, which serves area families in need. PUMPKIN SMASHING EXTRAVAGANZA

Downtown Westmont
To help promote pumpkin composting and other Halloween events in Westmont, the Westmont Environmental Improvement Commission will host a new event - The Pumpkin Smashing Extravaganza Competition. Community organizations and public agencies will put forth a contestant to elevate 25 feet in the air in a bucket truck, and then hurl pumpkins at a target below. The event will take place in the Cass-Burlington parking lot from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
HAUNTED FOREST TOUR

Twin Lakes Woods, 200 W. 59th Street
Bundle up and head to Twin Lakes Woods for the Haunted Forest Tour on Saturday, October 24. Guests will take a haunted trek and hayrack ride through the Twin Lakes Woods. This year’s theme will invite guests to experience SLASHERS. The entrance to this event is Twin Lakes Park, 200 W. 59th Street in Westmont. Ticket sales will take place from 5-9pm on location. The fee is $6 per person. Early in the evening, there will be a version of the haunted forest intended for younger audiences. The Merry Monster Matinee will be from 4:00-6:30 p.m. and will focus on the “fun” of Halloween. For more information, contact the Westmont Park District at www.westmontparks.org or 630-963-5252.
HALLOWEEN FUN FAIR & JR. HIGH DANCE

Westmont Community Center, 75 E. Richmond
The Westmont Park District has some fun Halloween events on Oct. 31 at the Park District Community Center, 75 E. Richmond.
The HALLOWEEN FUN FAIR will be from 5-7pm and offers Fang-Tastic Halloween fun for the whole family. This event will feature games, concessions, a costume parade, and more!
Then, sixth, seventh & eighth graders are invited to the annual HALLOWEEN DANCE from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. There will be a costume contest, dancing, prizes, concessions & more. This is a great way for middle schoolers to enjoy Halloween night.
TRICK OR TREATING

Halloween Night
On Halloween night, the Westmont Police Department recommends trick or treating from 2-7pm. BE SAFE! Be sure to follow typical Halloween safety tips such as wearing reflective clothing, be careful of masks and costumes that can impair your vision or ability to move, be careful when crossing the street, travel with groups, and have a parent check your candy. “We wish everyone a safe and happy Halloween,” says Police Chief Tom Mulhearn. “We ask everyone to drive safely and be mindful of all the pedestrians on Halloween.”
HAVE A SAFE HALLOWEEN
Following are a few Halloween Safety Tips promoted on the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) website to help ensure that everyone has a SAFE HALLOWEEN!
S - Swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be short, soft, and flexible.
A - Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups or with a trusted adult.
F - Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you.
E - Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them. Limit the amount of treats you eat.
H - Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help you see and others see you. Always WALK and don't run from house to house.
A - Always test make-up in a small area first so to avoid bad reactions. Remove it before bedtime to prevent possible skin and eye irritation.
L - Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever possible.
L - Lower your risk for serious eye injury by not wearing decorative contact lenses.
O - Only walk on sidewalks whenever possible, or on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay safe.
W - Wear well-fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips, and falls.
E - Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats made by strangers.
E - Enter homes only if you're with a trusted adult. Only visit well-lit houses. Don't stop at dark houses. Never accept rides from strangers.
N - Never walk near lit candles or luminaries. Be sure to wear flame-resistant costumes.
