“As we discussed our operations during community events such as the Taste of Westmont and the Westmont Street Fair, we decided to institute a bike patrol program,” says Fire Chief Dave Weiss. “When an emergency is reported at an event that has a lot of pedestrian traffic, our bike patrols can get to the scene of the incident much quicker than an ambulance, or even on foot. By being able to respond promptly, we will be able to administer care that much quicker.”
The Westmont Fire Department Bike Patrol Program for 2015 began with the first Westmont Street Fair and Cruisin’ Nights event on June 4 and has continued every Thursday night since. The program typically consists of two fire-medic staff on bikes at each event. The Police Department also has a bike program at community events, which also assists with quick response to calls.
“Sometimes, just a few seconds will make the difference in saving a life,” says Fire Department Deputy Chief Steve Riley. “We’re happy to provide this program so that we can better serve our community.”
