On Sunday, June 28, 2015, about 4:45 p.m., the Westmont Fire Department was dispatched for an activated fire alarm at Mayslake Village, 1727 35th Street in Westmont. Upon arrival, it was verified that there was smoke coming from an apartment on the first floor and the call was immediately upgraded to a working fire response. Crews found one unit on the first floor with heavy smoke and fire coming from this unit. When smoke was reported on all 5 floors with reports of trapped residents, the alarm was upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm, which brought in additional assistance from neighboring communities. First arriving companies immediately deployed hose lines to extinguish the fire. Additional fire crews evacuated citizens outside to a safe area. The fire was under control within 20 minutes. Two residents were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital for minor injuries from this fire.
“This is another example in which our early detection fire alarm systems allowed us to respond quickly and save lives,” says Westmont Fire Chief David Weiss. “As always, I want to commend our entire emergency response team and crews assisting from surrounding communities for their fast and professional response.” The cause of this fire is still under investigation at this time.
