[ARCHIVED] Earth Month Events Continue Through May 16

“Our Environmental Improvement Commission (EIC) is barely a year old, and they are doing a great job,” says Westmont EIC Staff Liaison Larry McIntyre. “They’ve been very ambitious. We’re excited about all of the programs they have coordinated for Westmont Earth Month.”

Westmont Earth Month will consist of 4 weeks of special activities beginning on Earth Day, April 22. “We want to thank the Westmont Library and the Westmont Police Department for partnering with us on these events,” says EIC Chair Aaron Spencer. Following is the Westmont Earth Month schedule of events:


PRESENTATION: HOW TO SAVE MONEY WITH ENERGY EFFICIENCY
May 2, 10:30a-Noon - Westmont Library, 428 N. Cass, 2nd Floor Meeting Room

The Westmont Environmental Improvement Commission and the Westmont Public Library will host a presentation by SCARCE which will provide real strategies in which people can SAVE MONEY by being energy efficient in their homes. Learn about Smart Meters, Electric Aggregation, Energy Efficiency Grants, Insulation and more. For more information, contact Kay McKeen at kay@scarce.org


RECYCLING EVENT: SPECIAL OLYMPICS PAPER SHREDDING FUNDRAISER
& FLUORESCENT BULB RECYCLING EVENT
May 9, 9a-Noon - Westmont Police-Fire Facility, 500 N. Cass

Hosted by the Westmont Police Department and sponsored by Docu-Shred, docu-shredinc.com, this paper-shredding event will be a fundraiser for Special Olympics Illinois. Participants are asked to make a $5 donation for each box of paper to be shredded. Banker boxes and similar sizes are preferred. There is a 5 box limit per person. For more information, contact Sgt. Brian Gruen at bgruen@westmont.il.gov. Also as part of this event, the Village’s Environmental Improvement Commission will be working with Waste Management to provide fluorescent bulb recycling. PRESENTATION: WATER CONSERVATION & WATERSHEDS
May 16, 10:30a-Noon - Westmont Library, 428 N. Cass, 2nd Floor Meeting Room

Westmont Public Works Director and SCARCE will make a presentation regarding the importance of water conservation. The program will include information regarding the Westmont Rain Barrel Program as well as feature an exciting watershed exhibit. For more information, contact Kay McKeen at kay@scarce.org


RECYCLING EVENT: DOWNERS GROVE TOWNSHIP ELECTRONICS RECYCLING PROGRAM
May 16, 8a-Noon - DG Township Hwy Dept. Facility, 318 E. Quincy Street

The Village of Westmont partners with the Downers Grove Township to promote their free monthly electronics recycling program. The vendor for this event is COM2 Recycling Solutions. Residents can check their website at com2recycling.com for a list of electronics that are acceptable for drop-off. For further information, please call the Downers Grove Township Highway Department at 630-719-6625.
