[ARCHIVED] Fall Safety Tips

Village of Westmont
Date Issued: Sept. 29, 2014

The Westmont Fire Department offers the following safety tips to make your Fall an enjoyable and SAFE time of year. Remember, October is Fire Prevention Month. Be sure to discuss fire safety with the entire family.

SMOKE & CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS
* Smoke detector and Carbon Monoxide detector batteries should be replaced with new ones.
* Test all smoke detectors and Carbon Monoxide detectors in the home.
* Make sure all occupants know what to do if either of these devices activate.

PRACTICE EXIT DRILLS
* Make sure everyone in the household knows what do in the event of a fire.
* Establish a meeting place, outside of the house, where all occupants will meet, for accountability.
* Practice exit drills. This is the only way to see if the exit plan works.

* STAY-LOW-AND-GO - Crawling out of a smoke filled structure.
* GET-OUT-STAY-OUT - Once out of a house, never re-enter until told it is safe.
* STOP-DROP-AND-ROLL - What to do if your clothes catch on fire.

OPEN BURNING
* Westmont, like many surrounding communities, have specific rules regarding fire pits. Generally speaking, open burning is not allowed in Westmont.
* If you have a legal fire pit, only clean wood should be burned it. Always have a bucket of water or garden hose nearby to extinguish the fire if needed.
* Never burn leaves or trash in an open fire pit. It’s dangerous and illegal!

* Never leave space heaters unattended.
* Never place space heaters too close to furniture or combustibles.
* Do not use an extension cord to power a space heater.
* Fuel powered space heaters are not recommend, especially indoors.

FIREPLACES
* Never leave a fireplace, with burning wood, unattended.
* Only burn clean, dry wood in fireplaces.
