Village of Westmont
Date Issued: Feb. 20, 2014
With rising temperatures over the next several days, combined with melting snow, frozen ground, and a forecast for rain, the Village urges residents to pay attention to weather conditions that may result in a flash flood. “These conditions may result in a flash flood scenario,” says Fire Chief David Weiss. “Our staff is taking steps to prepare for this possibility.”
“Our street crews have been in the field clearing snow away from drains to help ensure that rain and melting snow can freely enter the storm sewer system,” says Steve May, Director of Municipal Services.
Here are a few things residents may do to reduce flood risk to your property:
Make sure downspouts are free of any ice.
Make sure sump pumps are operational.
Make sure your sump pump is ice free and is able to discharge without any restrictions/obstructions.
Check the battery on your back up sump pump to make sure it is properly charged.
Clear the storm sewer drains near your property, if you're physically able to do so.
Contact Public Works at 630-981-6271 if you notice excessive water pooling on the roadway.
Be sure to monitor weather conditions during a potential flash flood scenario.
