The Westmont Special Events Corporation (WSEC) will be celebrating its 10th Anniversary in 2014. The board members and volunteers have already been busy planning for the summer events of 2014 and will add a spring open house and anniversary celebration to their schedule.
“Westmont Special Events was the vision of former Mayor Bill Rahn,” says WSEC Co-Founder and President Larry McIntyre. “He wanted to make sure that some of the community’s most cherished special events continue by being financially self-sufficient.”
In the late 2000’s when the economic downturn impacted the entire country, Westmont Special Events was moving towards economic self-sufficiency while other area festivals resorted to charging admission fees or canceling their events altogether. “Taste of Westmont is one of the largest community events in the suburbs that does not charge admission,” says McIntyre.
Westmont Special Events Corporation is a volunteer-driven organization that coordinates community events in the Village of Westmont. The WSEC hosts the award-winning Taste of Westmont, the new and improved Westmont Street Fair which includes the Westmont Market and Cruisin’ Nights, and also is a co-host of Westmont Holly Days.
“Each year, hundreds of volunteers step forward to make these events possible,” says WSEC Office Manager Kristine Turano. “It’s really quite impressive to see the number of people who come out to help.” WSEC Vice President Robin Gardner adds, “Westmont has a lot of wonderful community events. We’re always looking for more volunteers to come forward and be part of these events.”
