Westmont, Illinois - Date Issued: Oct. 3, 2023

The Westmont Public Works Department is currently installing three weather station devices throughout the community to assist with tracking weather conditions in real time. These devices will help Village staff when assessing weather events and determining the best course of action when responding to those events, especially in the winter. The weather station devices will be located at the intersections of Blackhawk Drive and Oakwood Drive, South Williams Street and 67th Street, and near Des Moines Street and South Cass Avenue.
The weather station devices, which are solar-powered with a battery back-up, will be able to provide Village staff with specific information such as road surface temperature, air temperature, current weather conditions as well as future weather forecasts. During snow events, this information will assist staff with determining the most efficient application of road salt and/or liquid material to use during snow removal operations. Also, with the camera view of the immediate area, the condition of pavement will dictate best practices when it comes time to begin plowing snow from the roadway. Ultimately, the weather station devices will allow staff to be better informed regarding weather events within the Village, rather than relying on National Weather forecast reports.
