[ARCHIVED] Upcoming Environmental Programs & Events From Cool DuPage

Westmont, Illinois - Date Issued: April 6, 2022

The Village of Westmont would like to inform residents of the many programs and specials offered by Cool DuPage.  Following is a list of just some of the many opportunities available:

Sustainable DuPage Zoom & Learn Events
Are you a business trying to grow your sustainability footprint? Just getting started? DuPage County and Choose DuPage have come together to host a series of lunchtime webinars. Join April 14, 21, and 28 to hear from industry experts in design and construction, energy efficiency, financing and more. Register on the Choose DuPage website

Car Seat Trade-In Program
Target is offering a car seat trade-in program from April 18 to April 30. When you bring in an old, expired, or damaged car seat to your local Target, you get a 20% off coupon for one car seat, stroller, or select baby gear. Car seat components will be recycled. Visit the Target Car Seat Trade-In website for more information.

Compost Bin Sale
You can make rich, nutrient soil for your lawn and garden using your coffee grounds, eggshells, vegetable scraps, yard clippings, and more. It’s also one of the easiest steps you can take to lower your carbon footprint. All it takes is a backyard composter, some food scraps and carbon-rich source like dried leaves, branches or wood chips. You will have high quality soil straight from your home. Add a rain barrel to provide water for your garden and you’ll be your own tiny ecosystem! Learn more about composting here

To help you get started, the County has partnered with The Conservation Foundation and DuPage Forest Preserve District on a compost bin sale.  Bins can be ordered on the Conservation Foundation website through May 8 and picked up on May 13, 3 to 6:00 p.m.; and May 14, 9:00 a.m. to Noon at Mayslake Peabody Estate, 1717 31st., Oak Brook, Illinois.

Native Plant Sales
With the weather warming up, now is the perfect time to take advantage of the many Native Plant Sales going on in the area. Wild Ones Greater DuPage created this helpful resource of upcoming sales. Keep it bookmarked as you plan out your garden or look to spruce up your business with some native plants. For a listing of Native Plant Sales in the area please visit the DuPage Wild Ones website

Marvelous Monarchs Program
Have you ever been curious about the butterflies native to DuPage County? Then consider signing up for the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County's Marvelous Monarchs program on Sunday, June 26 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The class includes a stroll to see monarchs in their many life stages. In addition, you will learn how to support their habitat in your home garden and more. There is a $5 fee for each ticket and children must be 12 years or older. To sign up please visit the Forest Preserve of DuPage County website

2022 Sign Recycling Event
The DuPage County Environmental Committee is pleased to offer the opportunity to recycle corrugated plastic and cardboard signs. The event will be held July 8, 3 to 6:00 p.m.; and July 9, 9:00 a.m.to Noon at the Campus Main Entrance on 421 N. County Farm Road. Signs and metal stands will be collected at no cost. Only corrugated plastic and cardboard signs will be accepted. Metal stands are also accepted but must be separated from signs prior to drop off.

Cool DuPage is an effort to reduce greenhouse gasses throughout DuPage County. The three metrics for measuring success are kilowatt/electricity, therms/gas, and vehicle miles traveled. Our program aims to assist businesses, large and small, and residents on ways to reduce the various areas that fall under our metrics.  For more information or to signup for email notifications please visit the Cool Dupage website and click the JOIN THE EFFORT button to enter your email address.
