[ARCHIVED] Fire Dept. Celebrates 90th Anniversary Oct. 13

Village of Westmont
Date Issued: Sept. 30, 2013

The Westmont Fire Department will celebrate their 90th Anniversary with an open house at the Fire Department Headquarters, 6015 S. Cass, on Sunday, Oct. 13. The open house will be from 1-4 p.m. and will coincide with the end of National Fire Prevention Week. The Westmont Fire Department was organized on October 13, 1923.

“This is very exciting for us,” says Fire Chief David Weiss. “We moved the open house and celebration to Sunday so that more people would be able to attend. I want to thank our celebration committee members for putting together a great program for our anniversary.”

The open house will include: Displays presented by Emergency Medical Services and Emergency Management Agency along with various other equipment demonstrations; demonstrations by the Dive, Hazardous Materials, and Technical Rescue Teams; a live fire “Flashover Simulator” at 2:30 p.m.; a visit from Lifestar 1 Chicago Helicopter from 1:30-3:00 p.m.; Northern Illinois Chapter Pink Heals Fire Engine “Jessica” will be present supporting breast cancer awareness; demonstrations in the Children’s Fire Safety House; Children’s Firefighter Slide Pole and Jump House; meet Sparky the Fire Dog and Freddie the Fire Truck; and a formal presentation for the 90th Anniversary starting at 3 p.m.

Also part of Fire Prevention Week, on Friday, October 11, 2013 the fire department will participate in the 19th Annual Silent Parade. The parade will begin at 7:00 p.m. from Garfield Street and Chicago Avenue in Hinsdale and proceed west on Chicago Avenue/Naperville Road through Clarendon Hills, Westmont, Downers Grove and then ending in Lisle. A brief ceremony, which officially closes Fire Prevention Week, will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1101 Kimberly Way (two blocks south of Route 53 and Maple Avenue), Lisle at approximately 7:45 p.m. The parade pays tribute to all those who have lost their lives to fire and features fire department vehicles from many surrounding villages.
