Westmont, Illinois - Date Issued: October 15, 2021
The Village of Westmont will once again host its Pumpkin Smashing Extravaganza on Oct. 23 at 11 a.m. in downtown Westmont at the corner of Cass Avenue and Irving Street during Wicked West Fest. The goal of the event is to help promote pumpkin composting. Westmont has scheduled a pumpkin composting event for Saturday, Nov. 6 from 9 a.m. to Noon at the Westmont Public Library, 428 N. Cass.
“We were the first community to introduce a pumpkin smashing event as a way to promote pumpkin composting,” said Communications Director Larry McIntyre, who coordinates the effort. “Now there are pumpkin smashing and composting events throughout the area. The publicity for composting opportunities has definitely paid off as each year we break another record for number of pumpkins collected for composting.”
More than 20 Westmont organizations and local agencies will be represented in the contest. Participants will bring their decorated pumpkins to the event and then be lifted 20 feet up in the air in a Westmont Public Works bucket truck, then toss their pumpkin at a target below. Contestants are judged on pumpkin decorations, proximity to target, and maximum pumpkin splatter.
This event is part of the month-long Wicked West Fest which consists of more than a dozen events in Westmont throughout the month of October. Other Halloween events in downtown Westmont on Oct. 23 include the Trick Or Treat Trail, the Wicked West Fest Costume Contest, and the Caskets on Cass Race.
