Police Departments across the country are seeing a rise in catalytic converter thefts. Catalytic converters are attached to a vehicle’s exhaust system and are used to turn hazardous automobile exhaust into less harmful gases. Thieves steal the converters because the devices are made of valuable metals and can be removed from a car in a matter of minutes, however, the cost to the victim to replace the stolen converter can easily exceed $1000.
Following are some tips to help prevent catalytic converter theft:
- When at home, park in your garage rather than on the street, and make sure your garage door is closed
- When away from home, park in well-lit, populated areas
- Calibrate your car alarm to sound when the car vibrates
- Install a catalytic converter protection device or shield
- Engrave your VIN number on the catalytic converter
As always, be diligent and do not hesitate to report a crime and/or suspicious behavior. When in doubt, dial 9-1-1.
