[ARCHIVED] Rainwater Barrels Can Save Money and Prevent Flooding

Village of Westmont
Date Issued: July 25, 2013

“Not everybody is aware of this, but rainwater barrels can greatly benefit homeowners,” says Mike Ramsey of the Westmont Water Division. “Not only can you save money by using rainwater for your outdoor watering needs, but it can also help property owners prevent flooding.”

Rainwater barrels are connected to the downspouts off home gutter systems. When it rains, the water that falls on your roof goes through your downspout is collected in the water barrel, which prevents additional water from entering your stormwater sewer system or being displaced somewhere on your property.

The Village of Westmont began a Rain Barrel Program in 2011 as part of the Village’s Water Conservation Program. Rainwater barrels can be purchased at cost through the Westmont Water Division. The barrels are $70.00/each and the Village will deliver the barrel to the home of the purchaser. Rain barrels come in 4 colors: Terra Cotta, Black, Grey and Blue.

For more information or to purchase a rainwater barrel, please contact Mike Ramsey at mramsey@westmont.il.gov or 630-981-6289.
