Westmont, Illinois -- Date Issued: May 12, 2021
DuPage County has recently announced a rental assistance program for residents who are behind on their rent due to COVID-19. DuPage residents may be eligible for up to $25,000 in emergency rental assistance from the Illinois Housing Department Authority (IHDA).
DuPage County is working with IHDA to help eligible DuPage households receive up to 15 months of assistance for payments from June 2020 through August 2021. Tenants must work with landlords to apply for the program, as grants are paid directly to the housing provider. Beginning May 17, the IHDA will begin taking rental assistance program applications.
Eligibility requirements for the rental assistance program include:
- Household must have experienced financial hardship due to the pandemic
- Household is behind on rent and/or at risk of experiencing homelessness or housing instability
- 2020 household income was below 80 percent of the Area Median Income, adjusted for household size
DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin said he recognized the need to extend a safety net that would prevent families from becoming homeless. “This program provides important peace of mind for both tenants and landlords,” said Cronin. “We are pleased to partner with the Illinois Housing Department Authority to provide relief for thousands of our DuPage families who desperately need help to pay their back rent. Grants received by landlords will allow housing providers to continue to provide a stable home for families as they get back on their feet and can assume rent payments again.”
Program details including income guidelines and a list of documents needed to apply can be found on the Illinois Rental Payment Program webpage. https://ilrpp.ihda.org . For further information, contact the Illinois Housing Department Authority at ILRPP@IHDA.ORG or 866-454-3571.
