Westmont, Illinois
Date Issued: September 10, 2020
UPDATED: September 18, 2020
UPDATE: The EIC will now be hosting a pumpkin composting event Saturday, November 7, from 9:00 a.m. to Noon. Residents are encouraged to drop off their used or unwanted pumpkins to be composted and kept out of landfills. All pumpkins MUST be cleaned and free of inorganic materials such as candles and other decorations prior to being disposed of in the composting collection container. Volunteers will follow COVD-19 guidelines for the event.
The Village of Westmont’s Environmental Improvement Committee (EIC) has decided to cancel their annual fall recycling events, however, there are alternatives for Halloween Lights Recycling and Pumpkin Composting.
Pumpkin Composting
Residents who wish to compost their pumpkins can do so at participating SCARCE Pumpkin Smashing locations near Westmont. Citizens are welcome to visit any location listed on the SCARCE website. All pumpkins MUST be cleaned and free of inorganic materials such as candles and other decorations prior to being disposed of in the composting collection container.
Composting your pumpkin saves landfill space, hundreds of gallons of water, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and puts essential nutrients back into the soil. The EIC encourages everyone to green your Halloween and compost your pumpkins.
Halloween Lights Recycling
Residents who wish to recycle unwanted or broken Halloween lights can do so at the Holiday Light Recycling Collection, which typically begins in November. Details will be published as soon as the start date is confirmed.
