“This has been a very successful program and I want to thank our staff for implementing this creative opportunity for our residents,” said Mayor Ron Gunter. “It’s my understanding that we’ve participated in over 115 social distance celebrations this past month, which speaks to the success of the program. Unfortunately, as our community and State move towards Phase 3 of the State’s Restore Illinois plan, this program will come to an end on May 31 as our emergency services will need to refocus on our reopen objectives.”
The program was created to assist residents who were celebrating special events such as birthdays and anniversaries during the State’s Stay-At-Home Order. During the past month, Police and Fire crews participated in numerous celebrations including one person’s celebration of receiving their Master’s Degree, a father and daughter double birthday, and even a double anniversary celebration in which each couple was celebrating their 69th wedding anniversary. The program participated in events throughout the community including all of our Westmont senior living facilities.
“I want to thank our crews for going the extra mile this past month,” said Fire Chief Steve Riley. “I’m very proud of our staff for championing the cause of lifting the spirits of our residents during this difficult time.”
