[ARCHIVED] Fire Department Training and Equipment Saves Lives

Auto pulse
Westmont, Illinois
Date Issued: March 5, 2020

The Westmont Fire Department recently presented several life saving awards to Fire and Police personnel who took part in emergency calls in which a citizen’s life was saved.  Our first responders rely on their training and equipment to employ these life-saving measures.

“I am extremely proud of our first responders,” said Fire Chief Steve Riley.  “Their professionalism and dedication to serving our community is second to none.”  Westmont is the only community in the United States to be Nationally-Accredited and have a Class 1 ISO Rating while utilizing part-time employees.

TRAINING
Westmont paramedics and EMT’s have monthly EMS training which enables them to keep their skills sharp and affords the opportunity to learn emerging best practices in the medical field.  In particular, Westmont first responders focus their efforts on cardiac training, which can be the difference in saving lives.  Also, Westmont recently completed training to assist staff with better identifying and assisting persons with dementia to become the first official Dementia-Friendly Community in DuPage County.

EQUIPMENT
Within the last year, the Westmont Fire Department purchased and began using a new piece of equipment called the Auto Pulse. The Auto Pulse performs chest compressions automatically, which allows paramedics and EMT’s to focus on advanced treatment with the assurance that good quality CPR is being accomplished.  This device was used in three life-saving situations in the past six months.

Emergency Medical Services is always evolving.  Westmont has made it a priority to keep up with current training and technology to ensure the best possible emergency response for our citizens.
