[ARCHIVED] Park Board President Jim Long Receives IAPD Commissioner Community Service Award

Jim Long
Westmont, Illinois
Date Issued: February 20, 2020

At a recent VIllage of Westmont Board meeting, Park District President Jim Long was congratulated by  Mayor Ron Gunter and Village Trustees on his recent receipt of the Commissioner Community Service Award from the Illinois Association of Park Districts.  Park District Executive Director Bob Fleck provided the introduction for the presentation and shared information regarding the significance of the award as well as some of Long’s career highlights.

The annual Mike Cassidy Commissioner Community Service Award is presented to a commissioner whose dedication, vision, and volunteer service exemplifies their commitment to improve the quality of life for the entire community. Recipients of the award have demonstrated the highest degree of community service and personal Integrity.
“Jim Long is one of those rare individuals who has been happy to remain in the background, letting others receive accolades even though he has been one of the greatest influences on the growth, direction, and success of the Westmont Park District,” said Peter Murphy, President & CEO, Illinois Association of Park Districts.

Jim has been a driving force behind many Park District projects and initiatives for almost four decades.  He consistently reinforced the goals of the Park District by seeking the acquisition of property for the purpose of creating open space or new parks.  Long also advocated for the continuation of existing programs, encouraged Park District staff to create new programs, and supported the growth of sports programs for people of all ages.

Jim has been on the Westmont Park Board since 1982 and has been instrumental in all aspects of Park District planning including negotiations, policy decisions, and visionary actions that has shaped the Park District since then.  Jim‘s vast knowledge and experience as a banker, real estate developer and broker has proved immeasurable.

The Village of Westmont thanks Jim for his many years of service and congratulates him on receiving this much-deserved award.
