Census 2020 Important to Westmont

Westmont, Illinois
Date Issued: October, 3, 2019

In April of next year, the 2020 Census count will begin.  The 2020 Census is very important to the Village of Westmont in many ways.

“Not only does the Census help us by collecting demographic information about our community, but many people may not be aware that the Census determines State and Federal tax dollars that are specifically directed to Westmont,” said Trustee Bruce Barker, who is overseeing Westmont’s Complete Count Committee.  “We want to make sure that every single person living in Westmont is counted in the 2020 Census so that our community receives its fair share of government revenue and resources.”

Other important reasons to make sure Westmont has a complete count in the 2020 Census include:
  • Brings Tax Dollars Into Our Community
  • Ensures Accurate Representation In Congress
  • Affects Appropriate Government Redistricting
  • Determines Important Community Demographic Data
  • Influences Resources For Local Housing, Schools, Infrastructure & Emergency Services
Publicity regarding the importance of the Census will continue through the Spring of 2020.  The official Census count will begin in April.

“Apartments and multi-unit dwellings can provide a challenge in regard to getting an accurate population count,” said Village Manager Steve May.  “Because a renter may be a temporary resident of the community, they may not be engaged with our village, but they still represent an important demographic that utilizes government services, such as emergency services and schools.  We ask all of our residents to help spread the word regarding the importance of getting a complete count.”

PARTICIPATING IN THE 2020 CENSUS WILL BE EASIER THAN EVER BEFORE
The U.S. Census will be adding an online opportunity and phone service for citizens to get counted, thus making it easier than ever before to be counted.  There are three ways to participate in the Census:
  • ONLINE
  • PHONE
  • MAIL
To avoid having a Census taker come to your home after the Census count begins in April 2020, simply complete your Census information using one of the methods above.  If you do not complete your Census participation using one of these methods, then a Census taker will come to your home to collect your information in person.

CENSUS ACTIVITY IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD
The U.S. Census Bureau has already begun its prep work and you may notice census workers in your neighborhood.  This is a normal part of preparations for the 2020 Census. Census Bureau employees will also be collecting information for the American Community Survey and other ongoing surveys.

If a Census Bureau worker visits your home to collect information for the 2020 Census or other on-going surveys, you can take several steps to verify their identity.  Check to make sure that they have a valid ID badge, which will include their photograph, an U.S. Department of Commerce watermark, and an expiration date.  You can also call 312-761-7100 to speak with a Census Bureau representative.

You might see census takers in your neighborhood for a few different reasons:
  • Verification of addresses in preparation for the census
  • Collecting responses to the census or another survey
  • Dropping off census materials
  • Conducting quality checks related to the census
Census takers who verify addresses are called address canvassers. They help ensure an accurate and complete count by verifying addresses and noting where houses, apartments, shelters, and other residences are located. Census takers will attempt to knock on every door in the neighborhood they are canvassing.

In May 2020, Census takers will begin visiting homes that haven't responded to the 2020 Census by phone, mail, or online, to help ensure that everyone is counted. At the same time, other Census Bureau representatives will be visiting homes for ongoing surveys, such as the American Community Survey.

The Village of Westmont is involved on many levels with the Census.  Since the Census is important to the Village of Westmont for public safety, education, infrastructure, and more, the Village has committed to ensuring a complete and accurate count of all residents in Westmont.  For more information on the 2020 Census, please visit census.gov.  Regarding our local complete count initiative, please contact us at communications@westmont.il.gov.
