Responsibilities & Services

Department is charged with the responsibility of serving and protecting the community of Westmont. The Westmont Police Department has received high praise for its dedication and commitment to excellence.  There are a number of divisions and operations within the Westmont Police Department, each with its own mission and set of responsibilities. 

Patrol Operations
Our patrol operations is a 24-hour a day function to ensure the safety and security of our community. To enable our patrol personnel to develop close working relationships with the community, they are assigned to rotating patrol districts and are responsible for addressing crime and safety problems in their assigned districts.

Detective Division
Our detectives, administrative assistant, and detective supervisor are responsible for cases that are initially handled by uniformed patrol and then referred directly to the detective division or initiated by a detective.

The Detective Division oversees the following programs:
  • Crime Scene Technicians
  • DUMEG (DuPage Metropolitan Enforcement Group) - which is an undercover drug operation)
  • Evidence retention and property control
  • FIAT (Felony Investigative Assistance Team) Investigative Liaison
  • Juvenile and School Resource Officer

Communications Center
The Village of Westmont partners with the Village of Downers Grove to provide consolidated emergency dispatch services for both communities. Our non-emergency number is 630-981-6300.

Records Division
The Records Division is responsible for the department’s reports, parking tickets, village ordinance violations, Freedom of Information requests as well as responding to information requests by insurance companies, the court system and citizens. Records Division personnel are available during Police Department lobby hours, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, except on Village holidays.

The Police Department's Administrative Division consists of the chief of police, deputy police chiefs, operations sergeant, administrative sergeant and an administrative assistant.

Chief James Gunther is responsible for overseeing all aspects of police department operations and leading the department in its efforts to provide a safe and secure community. The deputy chiefs oversee a variety of operations - patrol and detective divisions, operations and administrative officers, communications and records divisions.

The operations officer is responsible for most of the specialty programs, which are available to uniformed personnel including:
  • Bike Patrol
  • Breathalyzer Operator
  • Color Guard
  • Truck Enforcement
  • Community Service Officer (CSO)

The administrative officer is responsible for all police department training and the following specialty programs:
  • Defensive Tactics
  • FIAT Tactical Liaison
  • Field Training Officer Program
  • Firearms
  • Taser Training
