To celebrate Taiwanese American Heritage Week, the Taiwanese dance troupe of the College of Indigenous Studies at National Dong Hwa University will be performing in the Chicago area as part of their international tour. The troupe will arrive in the area on May 4, and then have a special performance on Wednesday, May 6, 7 p.m. at the Westmont High School Auditorium, 909 Oakwood Drive, Westmont, Illinois.
“This is very exciting for everyone involved, especially the dancers who have worked so hard to prepare for this tour,” says Angela Yang, President of Taiwanese American Heritage Week Committee. “We invite the entire Chicagoland community to come out and see this spectacular performance in person.”
The dance troupe is celebrating its tenth year of existence. Young members of tribal communities from all over Taiwan work together to share and learn about the beauty of the music and dance traditions of Taiwanese indigenous tribes. Over the years, the troupe has worked diligently to create new tribal music and dance traditions while preserving traditional indigenous music and dance forms and cultural heritage.
On Monday, May 4, 6 p.m. at the Taiwanese Cultural Center, 55 E. 63rd Street, Westmont, the dancers will arrive in the Chicago area and provide a press conference to promote their Wednesday night performance. However, the troupe will also offer and cultural student exchange on Tuesday, May 5, 3:30 p.m. at Westmont High School in which area students can interact with the troupe to learn more about their dance techniques and artistic expression.
“We are very pleased to host the Taiwanese dance troupe in our community,” says Village of Westmont Mayor Ron Gunter. “The Culture Center of TECO (Taipai Economic Culture Office) has been in Westmont for many years and we are proud to be part of these excellent cultural events.”
